Who is Shine?

Shine Corporate Wellness is a division of the Center for Natural Living (CNL) focusing on the reality that today’s workforce is increasingly overwhelmed.  The North American workplace is simply “stressed out”.  Employers realize that stress and anxiety are certainly affecting today's business and productivity.  Employees see the impact that stress and anxiety have at home or work and with any work/life balance.

 The backbone of Shine are the co-founders Irum Naqvi and Scott Hislop.  Both Torontonians that met in the jungle in Costa Rica.  What are the odds?  A chance encounter with Irum from CNL and Scott teaching guests the joy and accessibility of yoga.

 Each bring over a decade of corporate success and a lifetime of passion for physical, mental and emotional wellness.    

 Having spent 10+ years at IBM, Scott understands the stress of producing results and Irum with 10+ years as a senior executive at Fidelity.  Both with a strong attachment to yoga, meditation and the power of stillness and breath.  A friendship was born on the yoga mat in Costa Rica and so was Shine. 

 To present Shine means presenting two individuals that connect and believe that wellness in todays increasingly demanding world means starting your journey of wellness and happiness by focusing on yourself to create a degree of mindfulness for those around you to enjoy.

Shine brings a unique offering to the marketplace.  Our differentiators are twofold.  Firstly, Irum and Scott both bring a combination of corporate success and years of fitness/wellness experience to clients.  To complement each other, Irum brings in depth experience in meditation and breath awareness.  On the fitness side, Scott brings experience as a 10 year gym owner and fitness trainer.  Both overlap in the world of yoga where we find Scott as a 10 year teacher and Irum as a 25+ year teacher and “teacher of teachers” as the Director at the Center for Natural Living.

We emphasize the value of corporate wellness and team building.  What is the value of bringing key stakeholders into a room together to not talk business?  Essentially to not talk at all.  The corresponding value to an organization for senior management to dedicate time and energy for themselves certainly results in positivity for your organization that is immeasurable. 

Showing compassion and kindness for yourself results in an open and clear mind that cascades down to your direct employees and your colleagues/clients/family/friends.  Although an emphasis on “corporate” wellness.  We believe that Stillness in Chaos applies to life and creates a mindset beneficial in an overall sense.

 

Our Philosophy

 

Shine believes that corporate wellness operates under 5 key operating principles that put your employees on the path to success and make wellness a concept that is easy to understand and easy to participate and succeed.  Participants need no experience with fitness, meditation, yoga etc.  Just an open mind and willingness to try something new and perhaps out of their comfort zone.

 

Time

Wellness starts with understanding the importance of simply making time for ourselves. 

Our Canadian culture has us prioritizing many things ahead of ourselves.  Most notably being “work and family”.  We believe there is an overall need for employees to take just 30 minutes from the workday to de-compress, breathe and calm the mind. 

 

Our sessions begin and end to the minute and are scheduled much like any other business meeting.  The respect and importance of our time together is the first step for our joint success.

 

Location and Comfort

We won’t ask you to go anywhere.  Our proposed program only requires a board room at your location for our pilot program, participation of 6-8 key stakeholders and 30 minutes of dedicated time.

 

Setting the “mood” is critical.  Creating an environment where participation flourishes does not include going to a gym or strange location, changing into your fitness gear and trying to figure out what’s next.  As active yogi’s and having seen the participation of member’s at Scott’s fitness center we have first hand experience of the minimal retention of participants that are left with an option to “opt out” of partaking when wellness and self care is not scheduled with an importance equal to regular business meetings or family commitments.

 

With Shine’s Stillness in Chaos program, employees are scheduled for 30 minutes in the comfort of their workplace with no need to change, sweat and shower.

 

Value and Perception

Having been employed by large firms, Irum and Scott enjoyed the support and power of a large organization but also a feeling of being unnoticed or unrecognized and unappreciated amongst the masses.  Perhaps the feeling of being a “worker bee”.

 

Retention and performance increase when employees feel that their employer truly cares for their wellness.  Offering Stillness in Chaos has measured results and also leaves participants feeling that their employer understands stress/anxiety and most importantly is offering a remedy.

Your feedback and input allow Shine to customize next steps.  Our feedback is through a formal survey and informal discussion with the pilot group.  Any follow- on programs will be discussed and customized.

 

Customization

Your wellness program as an individual and/or group is not a canned offering.  A simple path is to prescribe a standard offering to all.  Purchasing and reimbursing a fitness membership is an encouraged practice but unfortunately the success rate of employees reaching their goals with the option to opt out relies on self motivation and results in low attendance and overall participation is minimal.

Based on the philosophy that corporate wellness and overall individual wellness starts with self compassion and kindness, Stillness in Chaos was born.  A program created for organizations understanding the demands of todays workplace.  This is where we start a journey and evolution to corporate wellness.

 

An attempt to implement a full blown corporate wide wellness program without understanding your organization, needs, wants and budget will not return the results that both Shine and x are striving for.  With this in mind, we believe strongly that our program Stillness in Chaos provides the opportunity for x to experience the capabilities of Shine and allows Shine the opportunity to customize a full encompassing wellness program.

 

Having your organizations leadership taking time and displaying self compassion and kindness only leads employees to the same behavior.  The results of the program are phenomenal when implemented on it’s own or in conjunction with your Employee Assistance Program.

 

Studies continue to show that individuals who lead a balanced lifestyle are high performers in their jobs. As an employer how can you help your employees recognize and manage their stressors and become a more productive workforce? The benefits achieved from regular practice of meditation results in stress reduction which boosts the natural ability of the body to heal, increasing immunity, lowering blood pressure and developing the total brain.

 

The 30/21 technique (Stillness in Chaos) of relaxation will guide your employees towards achieving balance in their professional and personal lives, resulting in a more focused, collaborative and enthused workforce.

 

Using the concept of 21 days to build a habit, the program will be offered as a 30 minutes series over 21 days 2x per week over 10.5 weeks.  Alternatively, clients have an option to receive instruction over 21 days consecutively.
